Walking
Cork's city centre is compact and highly walkable, built on an island between the north and south channels of the River Lee. Most destinations in the centre are within a 15 — 20 minute walk. Walking is the best way to explore the English Market, Oliver Plunkett Street, and the many laneways.
Bus Éireann
Bus Éireann operates Cork's city bus network. Key routes include the 205 (Mahon — CUH), 202/202A (knocknaheeny — Mahon), 203 (Grange — The Lough), 207/207A (City — Blackrock — Rochestown), and 220 (Ballincollig — City). Buses run from about 6 AM to 11 PM, with reduced service on Sundays.
Leap Card
The Leap Card is a reusable smart card for bus and rail travel. Tap on and off for discounted fares. A 90-minute fare allows unlimited transfers within the city. Monthly student and adult passes are available. Buy a Leap Card at any newsagent or online.

Cycling
Cork is increasingly cycle-friendly. The Cork City Bikes (BleeperBike) scheme has over 30 stations across the city. Unlock a bike via the app: rates start at €1 per 30 minutes or monthly subscriptions for frequent users. The Marina and Blackrock Castle cycle path is a favourite local route.
Train Services
- InterCity (Irish Rail/Iarnród Éireann): Cork (Kent Station) to Dublin Heuston (~2.5 hours), Cobh (~25 min), Midleton (~30 min), and Mallow/Killarney/Tralee. The Cork — Dublin service runs hourly from around 7 AM to 9 PM.
- Cork Commuter Rail: The Cork Commuter Network includes the Cork — Cobh, Cork — Midleton, and Cork — Mallow lines: convenient for suburban commuters.
Driving in Cork
Driving in Cork city centre can be challenging due to narrow streets, one-way systems, and congestion. Parking is expensive and limited. Most residents who drive use park-and-ride facilities at Black Ash Park & Ride or Kinsale Road Roundabout.

- Traffic: Rush hours are 7:30 — 9 AM and 4:30 — 6:30 PM
- Toll roads: The Jack Lynch Tunnel (N40) has a €2 toll for cars
Taxis & Ride-Sharing
Taxis are widely available. Use apps like Free Now (formerly MyTaxi) and Uber (operates through licensed taxi drivers in Cork). Fares start at ~€4 plus per-km charges. Bike taxis and rickshaws operate around the city centre on weekends.
Air Travel
Cork Airport (ORK) is located about 8 km south of the city centre (~15 min by car/taxi). It offers flights to UK cities (London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol), European destinations (Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Faro, Malaga), and seasonal routes. The 225 bus connects the airport to the city centre (30 min, €2.00 Leap fare).
