Cork's location makes it a perfect base for exploring some of Ireland's most spectacular scenery. From historic castles to rugged coastlines, here are the best day trips from Cork City.
Kinsale
Distance: 25 km south — 30 min drive / 45 min bus
Kinsale is a beautiful historic port town known for its brightly-coloured houses, gourmet restaurants, and deep maritime history. Don't miss Charles Fort, a 17th-century star-shaped fort overlooking Kinsale Harbour. The town is also a foodie destination: try Fishy Fishy Café or the award-winning Bastion. The Scilly Walk along the harbour is beautiful.
Tip: Arrive early to get parking. Kinsale gets very busy in summer.
Blarney Castle & Gardens
Distance: 8 km north-west — 15 min drive / 25 min bus from Cork city
Home of the world-famous Blarney Stone: kiss it and gain the "gift of the gab" (eloquence). The castle grounds include the beautiful Rock Close, the poison garden, and extensive woodland walks. The adjacent Blarney Woolen Mills is one of Ireland's largest gift shops. Allow 2 — 3 hours for the full experience.
Tip: Visit on a weekday to avoid the longest queues for the stone. The gardens are free and open when the castle is open.
Cobh
Distance: 16 km east — 25 min train from Cork (Kent Station)
Colourful Cobh (pronounced "Cove") was the Titanic's last port of call. Visit the Titanic Experience Cobh for an immersive museum, and the magnificent St. Colman's Cathedral which towers over the town. The "Deck of Cards" houses (colourful terraced houses climbing the hill) are iconic. Walk the promenade for harbour views.
Tip: The train from Cork to Cobh is scenic and runs hourly. Combine with Fota Wildlife Park (one stop before Cobh).
West Cork
Distance: Various — 30 min to 2 hours from Cork
West Cork is a vast, beautiful region of rolling hills, rugged coastline, and charming towns. A full day trip can cover:
- Clonakilty: Quirky market town with the Michael Collins Centre and Inchydoney Beach
- Skibbereen: Gateway to the Mizen Head, Lough Hyne, and Baltimore
- Bantry: Beautiful town on Bantry Bay, home to Bantry House and gardens
- Sheep's Head Peninsula: One of Ireland's most spectacular coastal drives with a lighthouse at the tip
- Mizen Head: Ireland's most south-westerly point, with a dramatic suspension bridge and visitor centre
- Baltimore: Quaint fishing village with ferry to Sherkin and Cape Clear Islands
Tip: West Cork is best explored over multiple days, but a focused day trip to one area (e.g., Clonakilty + Inchydoney, or Bantry + Sheep's Head) is very rewarding.
Ring of Kerry
Distance: 100 km north-west — 1.5 hours drive to Killarney
The Ring of Kerry is one of Ireland's most famous scenic drives, a 180 km loop around the Iveragh Peninsula. From Cork, you can reach Killarney in 1.5 hours and explore Killarney National Park (Lakes of Killarney, Torc Waterfall, Ross Castle).
Option 1 (Easy): Drive to Killarney, visit the National Park and Muckross House, have lunch in Killarney town, and drive back.
Option 2 (Full loop): Drive the full Ring of Kerry clockwise (to stay on the coastal side). Allow 6 — 8 hours including stops at Sneem, Waterville, Cahersiveen, and Kenmare. This is a long but unforgettable day.
Tip: The Ring of Kerry gets extremely busy in summer. Start before 8 AM if possible. Consider doing it anti-clockwise to avoid tour bus traffic.
Middleton & Jameson Distillery
Distance: 22 km east — 25 min drive / 35 min train
The historic Jameson Experience at Middleton is where the famous Irish whiskey was originally distilled. Take the distillery tour, enjoy a tasting, and explore the charming town of Middleton. The Middleton Farmers Market on Saturdays is one of the best in Ireland.
